We posed this question in our Facebook page as we thought as parents, we recognize this is a common trend among children.
All parents know children are picky eaters. When children have special dietary needs (Gluten Free or low sugar requirements), the food options are even less. What do you do to have your picky eaters eat?
From Catherine Danford: Make everything fun. We have cookie cutters, veggie cutters, molds for eggs. I put smiley faces made from berries on everything. Add a toothpick sail and make it into a boat. Put fruit and veggies on kabob skewers (even if served raw).
From Stan, who figured what our 3 yr. old’s favorite foods are, he makes it with a “twist”. If it is pasta, he’ll eat it no matter what. For this, Stan might make a white sauce to go with it and add some mashed cauliflower or some other veggie to it. That has worked great. He’s even added thin slices of carrots to mashed potatoes. Cooked correctly, our little one has not noticed on either account.
I use toothpicks and straws to liven mealtime. If it is a soupy meal, he can suck it with a straw. Otherwise he can pick up food pieces with toothpicks. I have even given him colored toothpicks to make it more cheerful. At one point I even gave him pretzel sticks to pick up chicken pieces.
What other methods have you used to make your picky eater eat? We want to hear from you!
Odo, Stan and Karl
